This podcast includes: Brad Layland and Pat Rhoades discuss the Bible and money with Greg Lehman.
This is part 3 of a 4-part series. Greg Lehman is the Divisional Field Development Director for the Eastern Division. Greg helps areas get financially strong so they can reach more kids. His Eastern Division is the healthiest in the country. We have Young Life staff that are full time. Why don’t we just have part-time jobs, why do we have full-time staff? It frees us up to go after the Gospel whole-heartedly. The Lord is doing something when it comes to money. Pat thinks there’s a reason why the Lord wants us to ask people to be involved financially, both for ourselves and for them. In I Corinthians, 9:16 it says, “Yet when I preach the Gospel I cannot boast for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel. If I preach voluntarily I have a reward. If not voluntarily, I have a simple discharge of trust committed to me. What then is my reward? Just then that when preaching the Gospel I may offer it for free.”
We don’t charge kids anything for club, it’s a gift. It’s totally free of charge. I support the Young Life area where I live, not for my kids, but for my neighbors’ kids. My kids don’t need it because they’re really plugged into church. The truth is we have this opportunity. Brad knows of a young area director who’s in a really small community with kids that desperately need the Gospel and this town cannot support Young Life. So he spends his days working a job and then at night he tries to find enough kids for club. Every summer he takes a handful of kids to camp. He’s not reaching his potential. When Paul is talking about how he’s preaching the Gospel free of charge, Paul was supported by churches. He preached the Gospel free of charge to people who desperately needed to hear about it. That’s what Young Life Leaders do. We go out and preach the Gospel. Every year Brad tries to read the Bible from front to back. He often doesn’t get as much from the Old Testament at times, but Greg has a favorite Old Testament verse that applies. There’s a great model in the Old Testament. The Levites were the tribe who dedicated their whole lives to serving in the temple. They didn’t own land, they didn’t work outside the temple and the other tribes were required to take care of them. It’s an amazing model for us in Young Life. In Numbers 18: 20 – 21, it says, “Then the Lord said to Aaron, ‘You shall have no inheritance in their land nor own any portion among them. I am your portion and your inheritance among the sons of
